Traffic light installed on Vulcan Hill

VULCAN – It won’t be long until motorists travelling along Route 54 have to deal with a traffic light atop the Vulcan Hill between Barnesville and Mahanoy City.

The light was installed recently at the Route 54 entrance to the new Mahanoy Business Park, just east of the Interstate 81 ramps.

Work on the intersection began over the summer as part of a highway occupancy permit issued to Northpoint Development.

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL – A new traffic light is seen on the Barnesville side of the Vulcan hill on Route 54 on March 5, 2024.

The Kansas City-based company has plans for multiple warehouses on the former Bendinsky Airport property. One of them, a 1.2 Million square foot building, was finished in the fall.

As part of that project, PennDOT required Northpoint to mitigate traffic impacts on both Route 54 and the Burma Road.

In addition to adding the traffic light on Route 54, they also widened Route 54 in the area of the intersection.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the lights themselves were bagged, and the date when they will be activated is not yet known.

  1. Stop lights atop the Vulcan on Rt 54 could be a problem. On a icy day stopped traffic could have problems starting on the up hill areas. Especially on the steep side.

    Keep up the good work.
