VULCAN – The new 1.2 Million square foot warehouse on the site of the former Bendinsky Airport is done and business leaders from the Mahanoy Area had the chance to tour it Thursday.

NorthPoint Development — the Kansas City company that demolished the Schuylkill Mall for similar warehouses — built the building and the chamber says it’s already leased out to a Hazleton company.

A second building is planned next door, and construction should begin next year.

Work is also progressing on infrastructure improvements along Route 54 atop the Vulcan and Burma Road, which was required for a PennDOT occupancy permit. That included reworking on of the I-81 ramps and building a 3,000 foot access road from the Barnesville side of the Vulcan in to the site.

The site was originally the Bendinsky Airport, built in the 1960s and closed by the 1980s. It was nearly chosen as the site for the Schuylkill County Airport, built a few years prior.
