SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – Some local police forces are now better equipped to help folks with autism.

The Collaborative Autism Movement, of Hazleton, recently donated Sensory Aid Bags to the West Mahanoy Township and Mahanoy Township police forces.

“These bags will better equip our officers when interacting with verbal and non-verbal autistic children during the course of our duties,” West Mahanoy said in a statement. “West Mahanoy Township is committed to keeping open communication with all its citizens, especially our children.”

According to CAM’s website, the bags “are designed to provide immediate comfort and regulation tools for children with autism during stressful or chaotic situations.”

They cost about $100 to assemble and include headphones, a weighted blanket, sunglasses, a non-verbal communication board, fidget items, a timer, and more.
