Hazleton area communities receive nearly $1M in grant funding for parks, fire companies

HAZLETON – Nearly $1 Million in grant funding is coming to Greater Hazleton to assist parks and fire companies.

State Rep. Dane Watro (R-Schuylkill/Luzerne)and State Senator Dave Argall (R-Schuylkill) announced the grant award last week.

“Our region is blessed with parks that encourage people to come together and enjoy the great outdoors, and with people who are committed to ensuring the health and safety of our residents,” Watro said. “There are great things happening in our communities, and I’m always glad to advocate for grants like these that empower our local leaders to invest in making things even better for our residents.”

“Towns and neighborhoods in all corners of our region will benefit from this funding,” said Argall.

The City of Hazleton is receiving $189,715 to benefit its fire department, with $100k going towards the renovations of three firehouses and $89,715 to buy a utility task vehicle (UTV).

The city is also receiving two other grants: $155,802 for an ice cream concession stand at City View Park and $29,076 for a pavilion at 12th Ward Park.

West Hazleton is receiving $200,000 to upgrade sidewalks and the roadway on Fourth Street and Cranberry Avenue.

Hazle Township is getting $300,000 for improvements to the western athletic fields at Hazle Township Community Park.

The grants were awarded last Wednesday by the Commonwealth Financing Authority through the Local Share Account grant program.
