TEENER BASEBALL: Mahanoy edges Shen. in quarterfinal continuation

WILLIAM PENN – In two extra innings a day later, Mahanoy City edged Shenandoah’s Mrs. T’s teener squad 15-14 in the Schuylkill County Teener League’s Jr. Division quarterfinals.

The game was suspended Thursday night at the end of regulation for darkness as the score was knotted 13-apiece.

The two squads returned to Vic Marconi Field in William Penn Friday afternoon to decide a winner. The victor would face #1-seeded Branch Township at the Llewellyn field an hour later.

The eighth inning, the first of the day, saw no go-ahead score. Mahanoy, with two outs, loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth. Shenandoah’s outfield came down with a flyball to retire the Mahanoy squad for the inning, leading into the ninth.

At the top of the ninth, a single-run home run by Jake Matta gave Shenandoah a 14-13 advantage.

In the bottom of the ninth, a sacrifice fly to centerfield knotted the score at 14-apiece again, keeping the game alive for Mahanoy. Shortly after, #2 Bradey Alansky sent a groundball to the outfield, allowing #24 Tanner Zawada to run home for the victory.

Mahanoy, the #4 seed in the tournament, then traveled to Llewellyn to face the Branch Township squad in the semifinals. Read about that game here.
