Hazleton man arrested for Mother’s Day shooting in city

HAZLETON – A city man is in the Luzerne County Prison, accused of aggravated assault for a shooting in May.

City Police said the shooting happened on May 14 at West 11th Street and Manhattan Court.

Albert Batista-Mejia, 21, of Hazleton, was arrested Thursday afternoon on multiple aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault – attempt to cause serious bodily injury, and reckless endangerment charges, among others.

Batista-Mejia was arraigned Thursday and committed to Luzerne County Prison, unable to post $500,000 straight cash bail.

He also had two outstanding warrants from Morris County, New Jersey.
