Zangari returns to mayor’s office in Girardville; wife fills vacant council seat

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL FILE - Girardville Mayor Michael Zangari at Girardville Borough Council on Jan. 6, 2020. Zangari was re-appointed as mayor Wednesday night.

GIRARDVILLE – A familiar face is back in the mayor’s office at Girardville borough hall.

Borough Council here appointed Michael Zangari as mayor to fill the remainder of Judith Mehlbaum’s term at Wednesday night’s meeting. Mehlbaum succeeded Zangari as mayor in January 2022, and resigned effective Feb. 29, citing personal and health reasons.

Zangari’s wife, Tammy, was appointed to council Wednesday to fill the remainder of Ed Burns’ term. He resigned last month.

Michael Zangari told the Sentinel, “when I served the Borough of Girardville previously as mayor, I was very proud of the $480,000 in grant money we were able to secure for our Borough for demolition and road repairs, both of which are still on going to this day.”

“With my wife serving as well now, the skies the limit for what can be achieved,” he added. “She is a go getter and when she wants something accomplished she sees it through to the end. She brings youth to council but also brings knowledge, common sense, and a commitment to make Girardville a better place.”

“We live here, we raise our son here, we’re all in this together to make a better Girardville,” he added.

When he was sworn in in 2020, Michael Zangari was the youngest mayor in the borough’s history. He was elected to a two-year term after the resignation of Joseph Catizone.

He did not run for re-election in 2021.
