Councilman resigns at Girardville, Mayor will soon

GIRARDVILLE – Girardville Borough Council accepted the resignation of a councilman and the pending resignation of its Mayor at Wednesday night’s council meeting.

Councilman Ed Burns resigned from his posts on both council and the Girardville Area Municipal Authority.

No reason was provided in his resignation letters read allowed by Council President Charles Marquardt.

Burns had been a councilman since 2019, when he and Brian Dempsey ousted then-council President Rob Krick in a write-in campaign. He won another write-in campaign for re-election in November.

He also served as mayor for a time.

Current Mayor Judy Mehlbaum also tendered her resignation, citing personal and health reasons, effective Feb. 29.

The letter was submitted Jan. 24, prior to the borough police force’s officer-in-charge’s legal troubles.

She said those issues caught her by complete surprise and, thankfully, do not involve the borough.

She has served as mayor since January of 2022.

Mehlbaum was present at Wednesday’s meeting.

Girardville residents interested in serving on council, as Mayor, or on the GAMA board should sent a letter of intent to the borough within the next month.
