Truck traversing Pottsy Hill strikes Smith Mansion gate

MAHANOY CITY – No on was hurt when a tractor trailer apparently lost its brakes on the way down Mahanoy City Road, commonly known as the Pottsy Hill, Wednesday night.

The crash happened around 8:30pm at Spruce and Main Streets in Mahanoy City.

A tractor trailer, owned by A M Best Transportation, Nashville, TN, was headed down the mountain into Mahanoy City in a line of trucks and other traffic that were directed to exit Interstate 81 South at Exit 131 due to a severe hit-and-run crash.

Reports at the scene indicated the truck lost its brakes and, in an attempt to slow the truck down, veered off the road and struck the gate and steps at the Smith Mansion property, causing significant damage.

The truck also downed a speed limit sign.

No one was hurt, and the Pottsy Hill was closed until about 11:00pm while a crew from Trail Towing removed the truck.

First responders at the scene included Shenandoah Police, the Humane Fire Co., West End Fire Co., Mahanoy City Police, and Mahanoy City Fire Police.
