KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - Light smoke emanates from the left side of the now-destroyed former colliery outbuilding behind Boyer's Food Markets in Shenandoah on March 12, 2023.

SHENANDOAH – The ruins of an abandoned colliery building continued to smolder Sunday after a fire destroyed the building Friday.

Shenandoah firefighters were called to the building behind Boyer’s Food Markets, which was the last standing remnant of the Rosa Breaker and West Shenandoah Colliery complex, around 6pm Sunday.

Smoke could be seen emanating from the basement of the now-collapsed structure.

All crews were clear of the scene by 6:30pm.

Friday’s fire was the third suspicious blaze in just over a week in Shenandoah, and the fourth since late December.

Authorities continue to investigate all four fires, and ask residents to be alert for suspicious activity. Residents are asked to report suspicious activity and squatters in vacant homes to local police.

Anyone with information on any of the recent fires should call the fire marshal of the State Police at Frackville at 570-874-5300 or the Schuylkill County Communications Center at 570-462-1991.
