SCI-Mahanoy prisoner accused of assaulting guard

MOREA – A former State Correctional Institution – Mahanoy prisoner convicted of kidnapping and robbery in Philadelphia County is facing more charges after state troopers say he assaulted a corrections officer.

Robert Fennell, 52, is facing felony aggravated assault charges, among others, for the incident on Aug. 30. State Police filed charges Dec. 7.

According to court documents, a corrections department sergeant came into contact with Fennell around 1:30pm, and Fennell became agitated.

Fennell, troopers said, balled his fist and told corrections officers that “if someone comes behind him, he’s taking everyone out.” At the time, he was also holding a pen.

He swung at the sergeant, striking him in the head and injuring the officer’s left ear.

The sergeant was treated at an outside hospital for his injury.

Troopers said the incident was caught on video surveillance.

Fennell is now housed at SCI-Camp Hill in Cumberland County. He is facing aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment, and harassment charges.

A preliminary arraignment is scheduled for 1:30pm Monday in Magisterial District Judge Anthony Kilker’s courtroom.

Fennell was convicted of kidnapping, robbery, and burglary in 2006 and is serving a ten to 20 year sentence.
