MAHANOY CITY – Among the items approved at Mahanoy City Borough Council Tuesday night were the demolition of a blighted home and the sale of a nearby former technical school.

Council opened bids for four potential demolition projects in the borough — 425 West Spruce, 800 East Centre, 728 East Market, and 66 South Main.

As a result of financial concerns, council voted to approve one of the four projects, 66 South Main, awarding the project to AMC Enterprises of Ashland. The other three projects were tabled, pending the availability of funding.

The project to demolish the home, which sits at the southwest corner of Main and Mahanoy, will cost the borough $48,888.

In other business, the borough is continuing its efforts to sell a commercial property on the northeast side of that intersection.

Council approved a motion to list the former McCann’s School of Business and Technology, on the east side of Main Street stretching from Mahanoy to Pine, with a realtor, after efforts to sell the building on their own were unsuccessful.

Last month, council declined the lone bid received for the building, offering $15,000.

Council voted to list the McCann building, through a realtor, on the Multi-Listing Service, asking for the appraised price of $90,000.
