Long-abandoned home at Bower and Oak collapses, hits car

SHENANDOAH – A parked car was damaged when a long-abandoned home on the east end came crashing into the street and onto a parked car.

The collapse happened around 2:30pm at 42 South Bower Street. Bower from Centre to Abbatoir Road/Cherry Street has been closed since.

The home has been abandoned or in a state of disrepair for at least ten years and neighbors said the home appeared to be on the verge of collapse in recent days.

No one was injured in the collapse, though an Infiniti sedan was struck by debris and towed from the scene.

According to the Schuylkill County Parcel Locator, the home is listed as owned by Joseph V. Savakinas. Savakinas passed away in 1979 at the home, according to an obituary in the Pottsville Republican at the time.

As of mid-afternoon Wednesday, borough officials were waiting on PPL Electric Utilities to secure power lines to the residence.
