HAZLE TOWNSHIP – Shenandoah Valley knew they had a tough slate ahead of them in their first year of competition, and that included Tuesday’s visit to the reigning Wyoming Valley Conference champions.

Though Hazleton is effectively the next town north of Shenandoah, save for the villages in East Union Township, they are not a typical opponent for Blue Devils’ team sports.

This year’s independent schedule for Shenandoah Valley, however, led to the matchup Tuesday afternoon.

The Devils quickly found themselves in a deficit after the Cougars scored back-to-back goals in the first minute, which Shenandoah’s Elvis Lara answered with one.

That was the only goal for Shenandoah in the bout against 4A Hazleton — boys soccer still only has four classifications.

Hazleton scored three more in the first half and another in the second half to take a 6-1 victory at Hazle Township Community Park.

The Devils move on to another tournament, this one in Millville, facing Warrior Run on Friday.
