Hazleton man facing homicide, DUI charges after ATV crash in Carbon

BANKS TWP., Carbon County – A Hazleton man is in Carbon County Prison after a rollover ATV crash killed a passenger early Sunday morning.

The crash happened just before 1:00am Sunday in the area of West Main and Wixoln Circle, State Police at Hazleton said.

Three people were riding in the ATV, troopers said, when it rolled. The two passengers, an adult and juvenile, were ejected and CPR was performed on the adult at the scene.

Both were taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Hazleton for treatment of injuries. The juvenile was treated and released with minor head injuries. The adult was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Cedar Crest in Lehigh County for treatment, where they succumbed to their injuries. Their identity was not released.

The driver, Joseph Reese, 42, of Hazleton was charged as a result of the crash. Troopers said he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Reese is facing charges of homicide by vehicle while DUI, homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, DUI, simple assault, reckless endangerment (two counts), careless driving, reckless driving, ATV operations on streets and highways, and unlawful operation of an ATV in a careless way.

Reese was arraigned by an on-call Magisterial District Judge and committed to Carbon County Prison, unable to post $250,000 bail.
