Frackville approves grant application for street sweeper

FRACKVILLE – This borough is seeking grant funding to buy a street sweeper of its own, so it no longer has to rely on neighboring municipalities.

Borough Council approved a motion to apply for a $239,748.76 Statewide Local Share Account grant to purchase a sweeper.

In recent years, the borough has had to rely on other municipalities like Shenandoah to borrow or rent a street sweeper a few times a year and therefore could never have regular sweeping.

This year, the borough budgeted for two runs, and resident Patti Domalakes asked for four, pointing out that other communities, specifically mentioning Schuylkill Haven, have street sweeping weekly.

The LSA grant program is expected to be one of the more competitive programs the state has offered.

In other business, council approved a pair of ordinance amendments, pertaining to code enforcement and the parking of non-motorized vehicles and tractor-trailers on borough streets.

The parking ordinance now prohibits the parking of tractor trailers — both the truck and trailer –, buses, and non-motorized RVs on borough streets “to maintain public safety” and maintain access for emergency service providers.

The other amendment updated the borough code to allow for the enforcement of the 2021 version of the International Property Maintenance Code. The borough previously used the 2009 edition.

In other business, council:

  • Approved the purchase of two computers for the borough office at a cost of $3,620;
  • Approved the purchase of six portable radios and two Panasonic Toughbook laptops for the police department using grant funding;
  • Approved a proposal from Mid Penn Bank financing the replacement of the roof on the Goodwill Fire Co building, owned by the borough, and to complete the Spruce Street FEMA project at a total of $405,000;
  • Appointed Harrison Harper, Butler Township, to the Frackville Area Municipal Authority board.
