Flames chase family from Shamokin apartment; pets perish

SHAMOKIN, Northumberland County – A Shamokin family lost two pets in an apartment fire in the city late Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called to the unit block of North Market Street around 11:00pm for the fire.

Assistant Fire Chief Stephen Jeffrey said the fire damaged the first floor of an apartment at 5 North Market Street.

The fire, he said, appears to be accidental.

No one was hurt, though a dog and cat died in the fire.

The fire was knocked down in about ten minutes, Jeffrey said.

Responding along with the Shamokin Bureau of Fire were firefighters from Mount Carmel and Kulpmont, and Area Services EMS.
