Borough firefighters dispatched to one brush fire, find second en route

TURKEY RUN – Borough firefighters, with the help of West Mahanoy Township, tackled a pair of brush fires Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters were called at 2:00pm to 298 Herald Road for a reported brush fire behind Bicentennial Park.

On the way, a significant smoke column could be seen behind the former junkyard at Turkey Run, with smoke blanketing the Gold Star Highway.

Columbia and Rescue Hook and Ladder crews proceeded to Bicentennial Park, while Polish American and Defender firefighters, along with borough fire chiefs, investigated the column at Turkey Run.

Crews at Bicentennial Park found a tire for a Euclid mining truck aflame, which was promptly extinguished with foam. and crews were clear of the scene in short order.

At Turkey Run, fire crews from William Penn and Shenandoah Heights were dispatched to the scene, the former with their brush truck and utility terrain vehicle.

The fire was found burning at the southwest corner of the long-abandoned junkyard. Fire crews brought the fire under control in short order.

About an acre of land burned before the fire was brought under control.

No one was injured in either incident.
