Paving projects take place on Shenandoah’s east end

SHENANDOAH – Streets crews were busy Tuesday on Shenandoah’s east end as the borough’s rebranded “Operation Paving” program ramps up for the season.

North Bridge Street, North Union Street, North Emerick Street, and East Lloyd Street were among the focuses for the borough public works department and contractors.

East Washington Street was also resurfaced this week.

Borough officials say the paving projects are the first of several planned this year as part of an expanded effort to “repair deteriorating streets, eliminate long-standing pothole issues, and provide continuous paving throughout the Borough.”

Borough Manager Mike Cadau said the program is being funded through interest earned from the proceeds of the sale of the Municipal Authority of the Borough of Shenandoah.

Trendsetters Investments, LLC, is handling the projects at a cost of $2.50 per square foot.

With two blocks each of East Washington and East Mount Vernon paved, the borough has spent $95,917.50, Cadau said. Figures for Bridge, Emerick, and Lloyd were not available Wednesday morning.

The borough has also purchased a new paver to allow its own streets department crews to handle some repairs in-house.

“This project is being managed using a true capital project process similar to what is used in the private business world,” Cadau said. “We are focused on competitive bidding, cost analysis, vendor comparison, infrastructure planning, and making sure every taxpayer dollar produces real results. Bringing additional paving capability in-house through our Public Works Department only strengthens that mission.”
