HARRISBURG – A pilot program intended to deter speeding in work zones is now permanent.

Governor Josh Shapiro signed House Bill 1284 into law Thursday, which makes the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement (AWZSE) permanent.

The pilot program began in 2020 and it was implemented in the Shenandoah area during road work in 2021.

According to PennDOT’s webpage dedicated to the AWZSE program, it is intended “to reduce speeds in work zones, improve driver behavior, save worker and traveler lives, complement existing enforcement by PSP, and promote work zone safety.”

A PennDOT report issued in March indicated that the program has succeeded in lowering speeds through work zones and reducing crashes.
