SHENANDOAH – Shenandoah and surrounding towns were without power for about 20 minutes Saturday afternoon, while dozens of others had lights flicker and lost phone or television service.

Just before 1:30pm, a large section of the county lost power, including Shenandoah, Ringtown, Saint Clair, Pottsville, and surrounding areas.

According to PP&L’s outage map during the outage, 14,000 customers were without power in the county, primarily in and around the Route 61/924 corridor.

Sentinel readers reported flickering power or a short, less than a minute, outage in Mahanoy City, Lavelle, Gordon, and as far as Cressona and Hometown.

Television and phone service was lost as well in West Brunswick Township and surrounding areas serviced by Comcast.

Power was restored on Shenandoah’s west end by 2:00pm, though the power failure triggered an automatic fire alarm at Ateeco, Inc, 600 East Centre Street.

Fire crews responded and determined the cause to be the power failure and were clear in short order.

PP&L’s outage map still shows 312 customers without power as of 2:15pm, in Shenandoah, Buck Run, Pottsville, Seltzer, and Mount Carbon. Power is expected to be restored by 5:00pm, according to the outage map.

It is unclear what caused the widespread outage.
