Watch parties accommodate fans for sellout playoff game

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - A watch party at the West End firehouse in Mahanoy City for Mahanoy Area's state playoff game on March 9, 2024.

MAHANOY CITY – After tickets for Mahanoy Area’s state playoff game Saturday sold out within hours, two fire companies and a bar opened their doors for watch parties.

The Mickey Holland Gymnasium has a capacity of about 700 spectators and both Mahanoy and Northwest were given an allotment of tickets to sell earlier this week.

Mahanoy’s tickets sold out within an hour, and Northwest’s were sold out within the day.

That prompted the Mahanoy Area School District to offer a livestream of the game on YouTube for those who couldn’t make it.

With the livestream, the West End and Citizens fire companies along with the M&M Redzone bar opened their doors for watch parties.

The Sentinel stopped by the West End in the second quarter of Saturday’s game and found about 20 spectators and several more fire company personnel watching the game on a projector in the hall.

Refreshments were served as well.
