Two injured, one flown in Delano car crash

DELANO – Two people were taken to local hospitals – one by ground and another by air – after their vehicle struck a utility pole at Hazle and Lakeside in this village Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened around 5:15pm, when firefighters from Delano and Ryan Township were called for a vehicle accident with injuries.

Arriving units found a Chevy Impala had struck a utility pole on the north side of the Hazle Street/Lakeside Avenue intersection, with an elderly couple sustaining injuries.

Lehigh Valley Health Network’s MedEvac 7 was requested, and practicing baseball players at the nearby ballfield were evacuated to clear a landing zone for the helicopter.

One of the occupants of the Impala was taken via MedEvac 7 to a local hospital, while the other was taken to a hospital via the ground.

Neither the extent of their injuries nor their identities were known as of Tuesday evening.

The Impala was towed from the scene by Hope’s Towing of Tamaqua.

Responding to the scene were firefighters from Delano and Ryan Township, EMS crews from Ryan Township, Mahanoy City, Lehigh Valley Health Network EMS, and Valley Regional, and the Pennsylvania State Police.
