MAHANOY CITY – Two people were displaced after an apartment fire on South Main Street here Friday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the 100 block of South Main Street for a reported structure fire around 3pm.

Mahanoy City Fire Chief Dan Markiewicz told the Sentinel at the scene the fire was contained to a single room in the second floor rear apartment of 109 South Main Street within about half an hour. He said the cause of the fire was accidental.

“We were fortunate with the time of the day, guys were down at the West End and the Washington for the pizza sale, they were out real quick,” Markiewicz said. “If this would’ve been 2 in the morning, or we would’ve had a few inches of snow on the ground, time would’ve been a very big factor here.

No injuries were reported, though Lt. David Truskowsky said two people were displaced.
