Sheppton man facing felony charges after intentionally crashing car in Columbia

MIFFLIN TWP, Columbia County – A Sheppton man is facing felony charges after state troopers say he intentionally crashed his car on Interstate 80 in Columbia County Saturday morning.

The crash happened around 7:30am in the area of mile marker 242.2, in the area of the Mifflinville ramp between Bloomsburg and Berwick.

Troopers said Michael John Hughes, 61, of Sheppton intentionally struck another car, driven by a woman from New Jersey, “in an attempt to kill himself and her.”

The woman suffered minor injuries, and Hughes was taken to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.

Hughes was placed under arrest for suspected DUI as well. Hughes was riding with a small dog, which has to be put down as a result of injuries suffered in the crash.

Hughes is facing felony charges of Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Cruelty to Animals, misdemeanor charges of DUI, Simple Assault, Indecent Exposure, and Open Lewdness, and several summary traffic violations.
