SHENANDOAH – A pair of properties on West Coal Street will be demolished soon through a grant from the Schuylkill County Land Bank, after Shenandoah council awarded bids for its demolition Monday evening.

The buildings at 28-30 West Coal Street are next to an empty lot where fire damaged properties were demolished a few years ago. The properties will be demolished at a cost of $19,445.

“The demolition of both properties will enhance that location for future development,” said council president Leo Pietkiewicz.

In 2017, the borough received a $41,875 grant from the Schuylkill County Land Bank to research a low incoming housing project for elderly residents at an empty lot at the location. At the time, council was looking to partner with Schuylkill Community Action to develop a taxable housing project on the site.

In other business, council appointed Carl Faust as the building code official, and approved adopting the 2015 version of the International Property Maintenance Code.

During the streets committee report, councilman Gordon Slater said the committee is working to develop a plan to fill potholes, “starting with the biggest ones in town.”

This year, the borough plans to mill and hot patch potholes, instead of filling the holes as-is with hot or cold patch.

In other business, council approved:

  • A police escort for the Divine Mercy procession, to be held on July 21.
  • Road closures for West Cherry Street from West to the Annunciation rectory, and West Street from Cherry to Poplar, for the Divine Mercy block party on July 12, 13, and 14.
  • A can collection at Main and Centre benefiting Brian Rooney, who is battling health issues, on Friday, May 24.
  • The use of the Shenandoah Softball Field on May 25 and 26 by the Shenandoah Little League for the 462 Slugfest tournament.
  • A police escort, Memorial Day ceremony assistance, and a donation on May 27 for the Shenandoah Area Combined Veterans.
