Shen. Valley holds line on taxes for fifth year

SHENANDOAH – Taxes are holding steady in the Shenandoah Valley School District for the fifth straight year.

The school board approved the 2021-2022 operating budget, which holds real estate taxes at 56.975 mills.

Each mill nets the district around $68,643

Taxes were last raised for the 2016-2017 school year.

The budget totals $19,139,643, an increase of $190,580 from last year’s budget.

Shared real estate taxes and wage taxes remain at 1%. A $5 local services tax, $5 per ton tax for fly ash disposal, and a 5% tax on culm processing also remain.

In other business, the district:

  • Approved a dual enrollment agreement between Lehigh Carbon Community College and the district for July 1, 2021 through July 31, 2022
  • Approved the election of school board members to the Intermediate Unit and Schuylkill Technology Center boards
  • Approved Class of 2024 Co-Advisors: Joan Matta, Alicia Petritsch, and Kimberly Mentusky. Board member John Petritsch abstained
  • Approved a letter of resignation from Amanda Garber, elementary teacher, effective June 4, and posting and advertising
  • Approved Megan Kocher, Schuylkill County Guest Teacher Program
  • Retroactively approved the return of 9th, 10th, and 11th grades to five days of face-to-face instruction on April 19, 2021
  • Approved Katie Loughlin as a life skills teacher for the 2021-2022 school year at a salary of $38,831. Board Member Dr. Jodi Loughlin abstained
  • Approved an addendum to extend an agreement between ESS Northeast, LLC, and the district from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2026
  • Approved the repository sale of 210 West Lloyd, 212 West Lloyd, 138 North White, 121 North West, and 118 North White Streets in Shenandoah to Shenandoah Borough for $1 each, and 208 Florida Avenue in Shenandoah Heights to Randhi Duran Calderon for $2,500
  • Approved a $20,000 cash transfer from the cafeteria account to the summer lunch account
  • Approved Travelers Cyber Coverage Insurance ($1 Million) for $7,752 for April 23, 2021 through April 23, 2022 with Seltzer Insurance
  • Approved early bird contract agreement with the SVESPA, pending solicitor’s review and signing of formal agreement
  • Approved the purchase of new uniforms for the varsity boys’ basketball team
  • Approved revisions to spring/fall sports staff:
    -Hiring of Jordan Marlow as a paid baseball coach
    -Resignation of Joe Michalik as a softball coach
    -Hiring of Rachel Gricoski as a softball coach at a stipend of $4,000
    -Hiring of Ashley Hullihan as a softball coach at a stipend of $1,100
    -Approval of Heather Yarnitsky as a volunteer softball coach
    -Resignation of Jim Thomas as football equipment manager and volunteer coach
    -Appointment of Noah Woodford as football equipment manager and volunteer coach
  • Approved the following building usage requests:
    -Jerry Wolman Hall of Fame for the Community Room (retroactive
    -Shenandoah Junior Blue Devils for the football stadium
    -Columbia Hose Fire Co. for Stadium Road and parking lots
    -Healthy Kids Running Series for the stadium track
    -Shenandoah Teener Baseball for the baseball field and facilities
  • Approved the appointments of:
    -Michelle Aungst as a full-time emotional support paraprofessional
    -Samantha Rudloff as a full-time life skills paraprofessional
    -Angela Salvadore as a full-time life skills paraprofessional. School board president Dan Salvadore abstained
  • Approved the letter of resignation of Ana Martinez, paraprofessional, effective June 4, and posting and advertising.
