POTTSVILLE – The 13-member graduating class from the Schuylkill Intermediate Unit were recognized today as staff members paraded through the county, visiting the grads at home.

“We have 13 seniors this year which is quite a big class for us,” said Paula Hromyak, principal. “We wanted to do something to make them feel celebrated, so we had staff decorate their doors with banners, fringes, balloons, and ribbon, and we decided we would have a parade of cars.”

Hromyak said about 40 to 50 people participated in the celebration.

Several of the stops were in the Greater Pottsville Area, including Nicholas Novack’s place in the city.

He told reporters he’s excited for the future ahead.

“It’s an achievement,” Novack said. “Just the fact that I graduated,” adding that he’s looking forward to “being able to work on my own.”

Each member of the senior class received a certificate from the school noting the achievement — home school districts issue their diplomas — and some earned awards in the school year.

The parade visited graduating seniors in the city of Pottsville, as well as Minersville, the Schoentown section of East Norwegian Township, and Mahanoy City, among other stops.
