Schuylkill Headwaters donates fishing line recycling bins to Gordon for park

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - John Bondura shows Gordon Borough Council a monofilament recycling bin on Feb. 5, 2024.

GORDON – It takes six centuries for monofilament fishing line to decompose. Rather than let it sit for all those years alongside our creeks or in landfills and cause hazards for wildlife, one organization is doing its part to recycle that material.

John Bondura, of the Schuylkill Headwaters Association, presented two “monofilament recycling devices” to Gordon Borough Council at Monday’s regular meeting. The devices are large pipes where fishermen can place their monofilament fishing line.

“People that fish, if they break off fishing line, they can stuff it in here and it gets collected from time to time by volunteers,” Bondura said. “It gets disposed of correctly.”

He offered two of them free-of-charge to the borough for Gordon Park, a popular fishing spot along the Little Mahanoy Creek.

“All you guys need to do is put them up and maintain them,” Bondura said, adding that at least 40 are set up throughout Schuylkill County.

The bins are in use all across the eastern seaboard, Bondura said.

In other business, the Gordon Game and Fish Association requested permission for to hold their Kids’ Rodeo on Saturday, May 11 from 9am to 3pm as well as kids/special needs only fishing from May 10 through June 8, both of would need a permit from the state.

Mayor George Brocious also reported that the Citizens Fire Company received a check from Geisinger to replace their outdated automated external defibrillator.
