PHOTOS: Snowfall closes Heights Hill, dumps 4 in. on Shenandoah Valley

SHENANDOAH – At least four more inches covered the roads, still snow-covered alleyways, and Ford Focus-sized snowpiles in the Shenandoah Valley today, and caused traffic tie-ups on Routes 924 and 54.

Shenandoah and Shenandoah Heights fire police were called to shut down the Heights Hill — Route 924 between Washington Street in Shenandoah and Pennsylvania Avenue in Shenandoah Heights — after a tractor trailer and a tri-axle became stuck in the snow around 11:00am.

Plows from PennDOT and the Municipal Authority of the Borough of Shenandoah (MABS) made multiple passes up and down the hill while the road was closed to clear the southbound lane and the northbound passing lane while the stranded truck drivers spread rock salt around their trucks.

The stranded tri-axle became free in dramatic fashion, sliding on its way up the hill, though the tractor trailer remained stuck.

With two lanes open, traffic was led up and down the hill once more.

About an hour later, Mahanoy City and Township Police closed Route 54 at the Vulcan Hill as multiple vehicles became stuck there as well.

Elsewhere in the valley, plows, residents, and business owners attempted to keep up with the snow both in Shenandoah and throughout the area.
