Philly man, SCI-Coal Twp. inmate assaults corrections officer during search

COAL TWP., Northumberland County – A Philadelphia man locked up at State Correctional Institution – Coal Township will face additional charges after state police say he assaulted a correctional officer when he was found with a “shank” during a search.

The altercation happened around 8:00am Sunday morning, when troopers were called to the prison.

Troopers allege Kashif Ellis, 33, of Philadelphia was being patted down, and, when the 32-year-old correctional officer found he had a “shank”, a makeshift knife, he assaulted the officer.

A struggle ensued, bringing both to the ground, where Ellis spit blood in the officer’s face.
