North Union accepts bid for first phases of Bunker Hill Road restoration

ZION GROVE – A project to restore a rural gravel road near this North Union Township village is taking shape, as township supervisors accepted a bid for the first two phases of the project Monday afternoon.
Bunker Hill Road, near the Zion Grove Trout Hatchery, is set to be restored for about a mile and a half near what supervisors called “pristine” trout waters.
At Monday’s special meeting, supervisors received one bid, from the H&K Group, at a total cost of $185,571.50 for phases one and two of the four phase project.
The approval is contingent upon solicitor review of the bid documentation.
The restoration is being funded through the Dirt, Gravel, & Low Volume Road Maintenance Program, administered by the Schuylkill Conservation District.
According to the conservation district’s website, the program “seeks to prevent several forms of non-point source pollution including sediment in streams, airborne pollutants, and chemicals. Environmentally sensitive maintenance practices have been developed to provide road maintenance techniques that address the impacts of roads on streams.”
The restoration, officials hope, will help protect trout waters in that secluded area of the Ringtown Valley.
Crooked Run, considered by PADEP as a High-Quality Coldwater Fishery and the Fish and Boat Commission as Class-A trout waters, parallels the road in one section.
