MAHS principal resigns; assistant tapped as replacement

MAHANOY CITY – Mahanoy Area High School will soon have a new principal, following two items approved at Wednesday’s school board meeting.

One of those items was the resignation of Stan Sabol as principal.

Sabol said he moved to Pottsville and recently accepted a position as assistant principal at John S. Clarke Elementary School in the city.

He said the move was in the best interest of his family.

Sabol was hired as principal in 2017.

The board also approved the appointment of Matthew Giannelli, of Mahanoy City, as the new high school principal with a salary of $80,000.

Superintendent Joie Green said Giannelli previously served as assistant principal for the high school.

The board thanked Sabol for his service and wished him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, Sabol recognized November’s high school students of the month Emma Lewandowski and Noah Hayes, and October’s 8th Grade student of the month Naomi Kowalick.

In other business, the board appoved:

  • The repository sale of three properties in the borough
    • 522 W. Market Street to Iluminada A Dominguez De Diaz for $1,724
    • 522 E. Railroad Street to Iluminada A Dominguez De Diaz for $1,154
    • 507 E. Centre Street to Yoselyn A Gomez-Torres for $1,104;
  • A resolution not to raise taxes above the Act 1 Index for the 2023-2024 fiscal year;
  • The Schuylkill County Tax Collection Committee delegate appointments for 2023;
  • An agreement with FMX, of Grandview Heights, Ohio, for the following:
    • Work order, preventative maintenance and calendar scheduling for a one-time fee of $2,546.08 and an annual cost of $5,092.15
    • Transportation requests for a one-time fee of $400 and an annual fee of $800
    • IT requests for a one-time fee of $400 and an annual fee of $800;
  • The acceptance of the June 30, 2022 audit report;
  • The purchase of two 2023 Chrysler Pacifica minivans at a cost of $41,477 each from Sands Auto Group, Quakertown, through the COSTARS program;
  • Mrs. Wislosky’s writing and research students to participate in informal surveys, with their responses being completely anonymous, allowing the students to practice writing about data and compare the results against research from scholarly sources;
  • Two FMLA requests;
  • The appointment of Bill Zack, of Mahanoy Plane, as Math Department sub-chair;
  • The appointment of Janelle Blozousky, Barnesville, as 4th grade Team Leader;
  • The appointment of Kathy Loy, Saint Clair, as assistant varsity and head JV girls’ basketball coach for the 2022-2023 school year at a salary of $3,567.21;
  • The appointment of Matthew Lewandowski, Gilberton, as junior high assistant wrestling coach for 2022-2023 at a salary of $2,537.67, pending completion of clearances, trainings, and paperwork;
  • The appointment of Jason Green, Kunkletown, as head varsity volleyball coach for the 2023-2024 school year at a salary of $3,861.68, pending completion of clearances, trainings, and paperwork;
  • The appointment of Jacqueline Boyle, Barnesville, as assistant varsity/head JV volleyball coach for the 2023-2024 school year at a salary of $3,089.34, pending completion of clearances, trainings, and paperwork;
  • The resignation of Alexia Daub, Frackville, as special education teaching assistant, effective Dec. 2;
  • The appointment of Ashley Dudash, Mahanoy City, as a special education teaching assistant at an hourly rate of $13, retroactive to Dec. 7;
  • The termination of Daniel Sleva, Mahanoy City, effective Nov. 29.
