Mahanoy Township police chief leaving for new job

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL FILE - Mahanoy Township Police Chief Brian Johnson, left, announced Thursday that he is leaving the department for a new position. Patrolman Harry Brown, right, was appointed Officer-In-Charge.

MAHANOY CITY – The Mahanoy Township police force will have a new leader soon.

Chief Brian Johnson announced at Thursday’s township supervisors meeting that he has accepted another full-time police job that will not allow him to work as an officer in another department.

“I’d like to thank the board of supervisors for their continued support of the police department and thank you for giving me the opportunity to lead the department for the past year and a half,” Johnson told the board.

Johnson said he’s received permission to stay with Mahanoy Township as a consultant to help finish ongoing projects, including the construction of an evidence room, and to help the transition in leadership.

He requested to work 20 hours a week with reduced pay for the work.

Johnson recommended making Patrolman Harry Brown officer-in charge and said he would help train Brown on administrative tasks.

“Thank you for everything you’ve done for us in the past year and a half, two years,” Supervisors Chairman Ted Styka said. “A lot of grants, you’ve got us, you’ve changed our police office, you’ve done a lot of stuff for us and we appreciate it.”

Prior to Mahanoy Township, Johnson worked for 21 years in West Penn Township.

He did not say where his new job is.
