Longtime sports staffers out at Republican

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - The Pottsville Republican-Herald building in downtown Pottsville is seen on Dec. 8, 2023.

POTTSVILLE – A note tucked into the corner of the scoreboard page of today’s Pottsville Republican-Herald newspaper warns readers that “some content you’re accustomed to may not be available in the coming days…as we go through a transition of staff and processes.”

That is because the remaining sports staff at what was once billed “Schuylkill County’s Greatest newspaper” is gone.

Leroy Boyer, sports editor for over two decades, left the paper this weekend. A sportswriter of 28 years, Bob Lipsky, left this month as well.

The sports department had seen notable coverage cutbacks in recent years, as the Football Friday feature was whittled down to four pages in the sports section from an entire insert, and Shenandoah Valley’s inaugural soccer seasons went largely.

In the news department, Makenzie Christman — hired as a reporter shortly before the paper’s sale to MediaNews Group — is gone as well, now reporting at LehighValleyNews.com.

The departures are the latest in an exodus of staff across the former Times Shamrock chain.

Though, all three positions have been advertised on MediaNews Group’s jobs website to be filled again.

Sports Reporter was posted nearly a month ago, Sports Editor two weeks ago, and General Assignment Reporter a week ago.
