SHENANDOAH – Shenandoah Borough Council approved a resolution at the May meeting to allow its fire police to take part in the Schuylkill County Fire Police Task Force.

According to the resolution circulated by John Bushar, commissioner of the Schuylkill County Fire Police Association, it allows duly appointed and sworn fire police from Shenandoah to participate in task force operations when available and makes Shenandoah eligible to request task force assistance.

“This resolution does not require Shenandoah Borough to send personnel when they are unavailable,” Bushar wrote to the borough. “It does not require any department to request the task force. It simply confirms that fire-police-only mutual aid is an authorized public safety function when properly requested.”

Under current practices, Bushar says fire police are often deployed as mutual aid with their home fire company.

“This resolution addresses the gap where fire police assistance is needed but the fire company itself does not need to be deployed,” Bushar wrote.

The resolution was approved at the May 18 council meeting.
