Jeep rolls in Suffolk, man injured

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - Lightning lights up the sky above a vehicle accident in Mahanoy Township Sunday night.

SUFFOLK – A man delivering pizza from Shenandoah to Mahanoy City was injured when his Jeep hydroplaned and rolled Sunday evening in this Mahanoy Township village.

First responders were called to the area of the former St. Nicholas Breaker on Suffolk Road, Route 54, around 10:30pm for the crash.

Shenandoah Police arrived to find a Jeep Liberty on its roof near the entrance to the former breaker, with the driver stuck inside.

Firefighters from Mahanoy City’s Humane and West End Fire Companies arrived shortly after and freed the man.

Mahanoy Township Police at the scene said the man was delivering pizza from Shenandoah to Mahanoy City in the midst of a downpour when the crash happened. Police said his Jeep hydroplaned, struck the embankment on the west side of the road, and then rolled.

At the time, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for the region.

He was taken to a local hospital by Shenandoah Ambulance for treatment of minor injuries.

The Jeep was removed from the scene by Steve’s Towing, Shenandoah.

Mahanoy City Police and Shenandoah Fire Police also responded to the scene.
