Hazleton man identified as Sheppton crash victim

SHEPPTON – A 59-year-old Hazleton man was killed Monday afternoon in a crash near this East Union Township village.

State Police at Frackville said the crash happened around 1:30pm on Route 924 just south of Sheppton.

Troopers said Jose Robles, 59, of Hazleton, was headed south on Route 924 and lost control of his 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse “for unknown reasons.”

He spun into the northbound lane and into the path of a Ford F150 pickup, driven by Gerald Benauer, 69, of Mount Carmel.

The two vehicles collided and Robles was killed.

Benauer was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital Hazleton for treatment of his injuries.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Firefighters from Sheppton-Oneida and Mahanoy City responded to the scene along with EMS from Mahanoy City, Shenandoah, and Area Services.

Fire Police from Nuremberg-Weston and Ringtown Valley closed Route 924 during the investigation.

Adjacent to the crash scene was a memorial to the victims of another fatal crash on that stretch of highway.
