DELANO TOWNSHIP – Fires are becoming a nuisance at a long-abandoned plant in this township, as volunteers tackled two Saturday.

The second came around 9:30pm at the abandoned American Cable Recyclers plant on the Lofty Road between Lofty and Delano.

Firefighters from Delano, Barnesville, McAdoo, Mahanoy City, and Hometown all responded to the fire, which was small and on a pad outside the plant itself.

The plant has been abandoned since 2010 and burned in an arson fire in 2013. Prior to American Cable Recyclers, it was used by Agmet Corporation for silver recycling, the contamination from which led to its placement on the federal Superfund list.

Today, the property is in a sorry state, with cables and other debris from its prior operations strewn about the facility.

Delano Fire Chief Scott Derr described the plant and fires at it as an “ongoing problem,” noting that Saturday evening’s fire was the second that day in the same spot.

Derr estimated that, in the last three months, there’s been six fires in the immediate area. The plant is in an isolated area, over a mile away from any other structures along a physically rough section of the Lofty Road.

He said it’s a safety hazard and he had called for State Police on the way to Saturday night’s fire.
