Details few on Gilberton police incident

GILBERTON – Details are few as to why a heavy police presence converged on this borough and the Route 924 bridge in it Monday evening.

Around 11:30pm, state troopers, armed with rifles, along with local police from Mahanoy Township and Shenandoah were standing guard at the bottom of the Route 924 southbound ramp in Gilberton as a state police helicopter circled overhead.

Other law enforcement officers converged on the lot of Bob’s Servicecenter, and others searched the woodlands and coal mine lands on the opposite side of the Reading and Northern Railroad and Mahanoy Creek from Gilberton’s Main Street.

Few details as to why officers were there were shared, though a trooper alerted the Sentinel’s multimedia journalist that an armed man was in the woodlands.

Published reports late Monday allege that a pursuit stemming from a federal-issued “Be On The Lookout” alert crossed through Mahanoy Township and Mahanoy City before ending in Gilberton.

Law enforcement officers at the scene Monday night could not confirm those details.
