Demalis named Rhoades Scholarship recipient

SHENANDOAH – Recent Shenandoah Valley graduate and class of 2019 valedictorian Emily Demalis was named one of three recipients of the  James J. and Mary Edith Rhoades Foundation Scholarship for 2019.

The announcement was made today by Marybeth Matz, Schuylkill Area Community Foundation’s Scholarships and Awards Administrator.

Demalis was one of three from Schuylkill County awarded the $2,000 scholarship, which will help the students “to defray the costs towards their higher education and pursue their dreams.”

The scholarships are awarded to students who “exhibit a commitment to education, citizenship, and community.”

Demalis will attend Penn State University’s Schreyer Honors College, majoring in biomedical engineering.

She is the daughter of Judy and Anthony Demalis.

Other recipients include Emily Ferraro from Williams Valley, who plans to attend Shippensburg majoring in biology/ecology, and Emily Amershek, Tamaqua, who plans to attend St. Joseph’s University in Scranton, majoring in biochemistry.
