Crash downs utility pole, closes Route 54

CONNERTON – A vehicle accident closed Route 54 and knocked out power for parts of Lost Creek and Girardville Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the area of the coal breaker between Lost Creek and Girardville for a reported single vehicle crash around 2:45pm.

Crews arrived to find a Chevy Impala had struck and downed a utility pole.

About 300 PPL Electric Utilities customers in Girardville, Connerton, Rappahannock, and Lost Creek lost power as a result of the crash.

Two passengers were uninjured after the crash, though the driver of the vehicle fled the scene.

Firefighters from the Girard Hose Co. closed Route 54 at the entrance to Keystone Anthracite while Girardville Fire Police closed the road in Girardville.

Rangers Hose Co. firefighters responded to the scene as well, along with Ashland’s Washington Ambulance and Butler Township police.

Emergency services remained on scene until PPL crews arrived and began to make repairs to the pole.
