UPDATE: Mt. Carmel man injured in I-81 truck crash

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - A crashed tractor trailer is seen at the bottom of an embankment along Interstate 81 Monday afternoon.

RYAN TOWNSHIP – State Police at Frackville have released further details on yesterday’s tractor trailer crash on Interstate 81.

Troopers said Randall Edwards, 57, of Mount Carmel, was injured and transported to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville via MedEvac for treatment.

The crash happened around 4:45pm as Edwards was headed south on I-81 when, for unknown reasons, his truck ran off the right-hand shoulder of the road, striking a set of guiderails before plummeting 70-feet down an embankment and overturning at mile marker 125.3.

Edwards was entrapped in the overturned truck and had to be extricated by rescue crews from Mahanoy City, Ashland, Englewood, Altamont, William Penn, and Ryan Township.

Crews used rope rescue techniques to both get tools and personnel down to the trapped man, and to get him up to awaiting Shenandoah EMS crews and a Lehigh Valley MedEvac helicopter, which landed on the closed highway.

I-81 southbound was closed for about 30 minutes as the incident was ongoing.

Troopers said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
