Borough approves 2020 road program

SHENANDOAH – A pair of streets will be repaved soon, after borough council accepted a bid for the 2020 road program.

The bid was accepted at Monday evening’s meeting.

Ronnie C. Folk Paving, Shoemakersville, will repave South White Street from Centre to Oak as well as West Coal Street from Walnut to Stadium Road.

The two streets are in rough condition, with the unit block of South White riddled with milled — but not filled — potholes.

Borough Manager Tony Sajone said paving work is expected to begin soon.

In other business, the borough has a new building inspector.

Carl Faust resigned at the meeting Monday, citing a need to reduce workload.

The borough approved hiring Building Inspection Underwriters, of Denver, Lancaster County, to replace Faust.

Michael Gensemer, manager at Harrisburg, was present at the meeting to explain the company’s services and answer questions from the public.

The first public comment was from Charlie Vascavage.

“Just do a good job,” Vascavage said.

“If we don’t, you could fire [us],” Gensemer responded.

In other business, borough council:

  • Approved the tax claim sale of:
    – 325 West Oak Street to Aida Roque Decena De Luna for $1,500
    – 410 West Mount Vernon to Well Born Home Buyers, LLC for $1,500
    – 314 South West Street to Sandra Valdez for $1,854.61
    – 316 South West Street to Andrea Torres for $1,854.61
    – 8 South Lehigh Street to Luis A Pena Franco for $1,915
  • Approved the Community Development Block Grant Coronavirus Program budget, splitting the borough’s allocation of $63,585 into Economic Development/Economic Recovery Programming at a cost of $52,140 and Program Administration at a cost of $11,445.
  • Approved reallocating CDBG funds to go towards the Girard Park improvement project.
