MOUNT CARMEL, Northumberland County – One person was taken to a Shamokin hospital for treatment of burns after a bedroom fire early Sunday morning.

Firefighters were called to 516 East 5th Street, Route 61, around 1:30am.

Assistant Fire Chief John Janolek Sr., Clover Fire Co., was one of the first firefighters to arrive.

“When I got here, I could see orange [at the front], a little more to the rear, so I knew it was more to the rear,” Janolek said of the conditions upon arrival. “It was a very good stop.”

Janolek said the fire was a “room and contents” fire, damaging a third floor bedroom on the 516 side of a duplex.

“PD went in they got everybody out by the time I got here, and they started shutting doors,” Janolek said. “That’s what held it to the one room and contents.”

The fire was extinguished within about an hour, with firefighters remaining on scene cleaning up until about 3:30am.

One person suffered burns in the fire and was taken to Geisinger Shamokin Area Community Hospital for treatment.

The fire remains under investigation, Janolek said.

Firefighters from all Mt. Carmel fire companies, as well as Atlas and Shamokin firefighters, responded to the scene.

Assisting were Mt. Carmel borough and township police, Area Services EMS, and Ashland’s Washington Fire Co. Ambulance.
