MAHANOY CITY – Though there won’t be a formal Memorial Day ceremony at the veterans’ memorial in Mahanoy City this year, two veterans and two Northern Schuylkill Rotary members still recognized the valley’s fallen.
The informal ceremony took place Thursday afternoon at the memorial at Catawissa and Centre Streets.

Mark Bernardyn, with the Northern Schuylkill Rotary, said that the group believed there should still be some sort of recognition. The typical ceremony at the memorial is on a hiatus this year and organizers expect it to return next year.
Bernardyn and fellow Rotarian, Brad Oravitz, led the service with the pledge of allegiance, a prayer, and a poem.
Veterans Justin Koval, U.S. Army; and Joe Filanowski, commander of the Mahanoy City American Legion, then laid the wreath at the memorial.
