SHENANDOAH – An apartment block for veterans is coming to Shenandoah’s east end.
Zoners last week unanimously approved an application to build a 12-unit apartment building on the site of the former United Wiping Cloth Co. at Lehigh and Lloyd Streets on the east end.
Borough Council voted Monday to approve the project as well.
According to the zoning application, Par-King, Inc., of Frackville, is developing the project on land owned by the Redevelopment Authority of Schuylkill County. Par-King also developed the Cherry Street Commons in Frackville.
It will be garden-style apartments with ten one-bedroom units and two two-bedroom units.
“It is phenomenal,” Borough Manager Mike Cadau said at Monday’s meeting.
Cadau and Borough Council President Joe Boris both said the project will house veterans.
The site is the former site of the United Wiping Cloth factory and neighboring homes on Bower and Lehigh streets. The plant was originally a meat-processing facility, later turned into a garment factory and finally an apartment before a spectacular fire destroyed the building in 2020.
