PennDOT implementing highway restrictions ahead of winter storm

FRACKVILLE – Commercial vehicles will be banned from Pennsylvania’s Interstate highways beginning Saturday.

PennDOT says Tier 4 vehicle restrictions will be in place beginning at midnight on Saturday, Jan. 24.

On roadways with Tier 4 restrictions in place, no commercial vehicles are permitted. Additionally, all school buses, commercial buses, motor coaches, motorcycles, RVs/motorhomes and passenger vehicles (cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers are not permitted on affected roadways while restrictions are in place.

This restriction applies to Interstate 81 and Interstate 80 in our area.

The agency says they are preparing ahead of the storm and will have crews working around the clock to treat and clear roads.

“Our crews are hard at work preparing for this weekend’s storm, and we’ll be out in force throughout the event,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “With the accumulation we’re expecting to see across most of the state, it’s important to remember that roads will not be completely clear of snow. Please, avoid traveling if you can. If you must venture out, please slow down and allow extra time. You can find the most up-to-date information about travel conditions, plow locations, and vehicle restrictions at 511PA.com or the 511PA app.”

PennDOT and the State Police urge drivers to avoid unnecessary travel.

“If you must travel, please ensure your vehicle is properly equipped for travel by checking the vehicle’s tire pressure, tread, wipers, fuel amount, and windshield wiper fluid,” State Police at Hazleton said in a statement. “Plan your route ahead of time, allow extra travel time, go slow, allow proper stopping distance, and wear your seatbelt.”

“Please exercise patience and caution while driving in winter weather,” said Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens, Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) Acting Commissioner. “Slow down, make sure your windows, roof, and mirrors are completely clear, and stay alert to the actions of other drivers. A few simple precautions can make all the difference in keeping you, your passengers, and everyone around you safe.”

Another timely reminder, drivers must remove snow and ice from their vehicles.
