Gilberton, Girardville pick next Mayors via write-ins
GILBERTON – We now know who won the four-man race for Mayor of Gilberton, among other write-in races in our area.
The Schuylkill County Election Bureau released the unofficial final results for the general election earlier this week.
Though two candidates were on the ballot for Gilberton Borough Mayor, they were out-voted by two write-in candidates.
Lloyd George was the Democratic nominee while Edward J. Martofel was the Republican nominee.
George had 30 votes and Martofel had 24 votes.
However, Rick Recla and Sean Foley both mounted write-in campaigns and surpassed both.
Recla was the top vote-getter with 55 write-in votes — 52 on Election Day and three in the mail.
Foley had 53 votes, according to the Schuylkill County Election Bureau tally — 37 on Election Day and 16 in the mail.
Foley likely had one additional vote, as a mail-in vote is credited to “Sean Fogly.”
According to state law, “if the intention of the voter is discernable under the standards that define what constitutes a valid vote developed pursuant to…the Pennsylvania Election Code, an abbreviation, misspelling or other minor variation in the form of the name of a candidate or a political party shall be accepted as a valid vote.”
Girardville
Girardville’s next mayor will likely be Dave Brennan.
Incumbent Mayor Michael Zangari was not on the ballot this year, and no other candidate filed to be on the ballot.
In the election, 141 write-in votes were cast for several dozen people.
Three received more than ten votes: Dave Brennan with 67, David J. Willis with 17, and Michael Zangari with 16.
