Grants awarded to improve parks in Nuremberg, Altamont, build Schuylkill River Trail into area

NUREMBERG – Some parks in our area are going to receive some upgrades courtesy of state grants, including parks in Nuremberg and Altamont.

The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources announced $79.4 Million in grants for 307 projects they say are aimed at expanding recreational opportunities, conserving natural spaces, and revitalizing communities.

“Investing in these projects – from improving our parks and trails to planting trees in our neighborhoods to increasing access to our rivers – attracts visitors to Pennsylvania, boosts local businesses, and strengthens our communities,” Governor Josh Shapiro said in a media release.

Ten projects were in Schuylkill County, including two in the north.

“I’m very grateful that these dollars–this highly competitive funding–will improve opportunities for my constituents to enjoy the natural beauty of our area,” said Argall.

North Union Township is receiving $91,000 to further develop the Nuremberg Community Park, a hub of the community and host to the Nuremberg Celebration each summer.

“This park is an important asset to the community, but it is in need of an upgrade,” said Rep. Dane Watro (R-116). “That’s why we worked to secure the state funding to make these improvements possible in order to provide a safe, modern recreational facility for all to enjoy.”

Work will include the installation of a pedestrian walkway, playground equipment with safety surfacing, ADA access, and more.

Elsewhere, West Mahanoy Township is receiving $67,500 to rehabilitate the Altamont Park.

There, playground equipment with safety surfacing will be installed.

“Investments like these in our parks and recreational spaces bring valuable improvements to our communities,” said Rep. Tim Twardzik (R-123). “By expanding and enhancing public spaces, we’re fostering safe, welcoming areas where residents of all ages can come together, stay active, and enjoy the outdoors. These fantastic projects will make our neighborhoods more inviting and welcoming, sparking more community pride.”

The planned Schuylkill River Trail received the largest grant award in Schuylkill County — $50,000 to develop the trail in Blythe Township, New Castle Township, and Saint Clair. The grant will construct 4.6 miles of trail from Industrial Park Road in Saint Clair to the trailhead at State Game Lands 326 in Blythe Township.

That would get the trail through ‘The Grade’ and to the outskirts of Frackville.

Other grants approved in the county include $65,000 for the Forestville Playground in Cass Township, $70,000 for Foster Township Community Park, and $80,000 for the Good Spring Park and Trail in Frailey Township.

No grants were awarded in Columbia County, or in the Sentinel‘s coverage area in Luzerne and Northumberland counties.
